ATHENS UNIVERSITY, FACULTY OF BIOLOGY DEPT. OF CELL BIOLOGY AND BIOPHYSICS Head: Dr. Lukas H. Margaritis, Professor of Cell Biology and Radiobiology Collaborators: Dr. Dimitris Panagopoulos, Radiobiologist, Dr. Niki Messini-Nikolaki, Cell Biologist On going research is focused on the effects of various kinds of electromagnetic radiation on the reproduction of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster . Our recent results on the effects of mobile phone radiation have been presented at the Greek edition of the Journal "Scientific American" (see article in Greek). In addition a theoretical model describing the effects of electromagnetic radiation on cells has been published:
Biochem Biophys Res Commun. 2000 Jun 16;272(3):634-40. PMID: 10860806; UI: 20318338 Special attention has been given to the biological effects of mobile phone radiation (for the first time worldwide using real communication conditions) on model cell systems including oogenesis in Diptera. The results have shown a decrease in the reproductive capacity and have been published (see article). Our current work in focused on the effects of cellular and molecular parameters caused by mobile phone radiation using various types of cells including human cell cultures, under a variety of normal operating conditions. For this purpose a large number of commercially available cellular phones are scheduled to be tested.
